What Is Yoga?

 

Yoga is an art and science of healthy living. The word ‘Yoga’ is derived from the Sanskrit root ‘Yuj’, meaning ‘to join’ or ‘to yoke’ or ‘to unite’.

Yoga, a union between the mind, body and soul has been practised since ages in keeping the body functioning fit and fine, holistically. The benefits of yoga are not just limited to stress relief and mental wellness, it also increases our self-esteem, maintains the immune system and keeps the body overall healthy.

International Yoga Day 2022- Yoga For Humanity 

The eighth International Day of Yoga will be observed on June 21 in India and all over the world with the theme, “Yoga for Humanity”. 

Following extensive deliberation and consultation, the theme was selected to portray how yoga contributed to alleviating suffering during the peak of the pandemic. 

History Of International Day Of Yoga

Considering the benefits of yoga, prime minister Narendra Modi on September 27, 2014, first proposed the idea of International Yoga Day and later there was a resolution to establish June 21 as International Yoga Day which was introduced by India’s Ambassador, Asoke Kumar Mukerji. 

The first International Day of Yoga was observed around the world on June 21, 2015 and since then there has been a different theme every year. Some of previous themes of International Yoga Day were:

 

  • 2015: Yoga for Harmony and Peace
  • 2016: Yoga for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals
  • 2017: Yoga for Health
  • 2018: Yoga for Peace
  • 2019: Yoga for Heart
  • 2020: Yoga at Home and Yoga with Family
  • 2021: Yoga For Wellness
